A 2014 graduate of Norview High School, Aj was realizing her college dream as a freshman at Longwood University when her life was tragically taken at the age of 18. The outpouring of support from the local community during that timeframe was overwhelming. As a result of this support, Aj’s friends, family and I decided to create this memorial scholarship as a way to honor her, keep her spirit alive and give back to the community. A charismatic, intelligent, talented, vibrant and often described “All American Girl”, Aj touched countless lives as a natural leader, both on and off fields of play. An avid multi-sport athlete, she excelled from her early days of playing tee ball, to playing varsity sports for four years at Norview High School, to club softball and field hockey at Longwood University. She was in love with and thrived on competition, the relationships that were formed and was addicted to giving back to the community and doing kind things for others. Aj selflessly volunteered her time with various organizations and participated in the Polar Plunge, raising money for Special Olympics, despite having no direct ties or obligation to do so.
The mission of the Anjelica Hadsell Memorial Scholarship foundation is to provide financial assistance to a deserving student athlete within the Norfolk Public School system entering their freshman year of college. The annual recipient of this scholarship is required to embody all of the characteristics that Aj displayed throughout her full, yet short life. Those characteristics are dedication to education, teamwork and selflessness. To execute this mission, our foundation hosts multiple fundraising events throughout the year, including but not limited to, a softball tournament, field hockey clinic, golf tournament and an affordable Halloween event for the local community. Our events bring the community together and send a positive message about community involvement and teamwork for local young men and women. There are numerous expenses connected with the events and we rely solely on the support of local community members and local businesses for scholarship funding. These events would not be successful without the generous sponsorship or donations from charitable organizations.
